Frequently asked questions about our electricity products

How do I know which electricity product I’m using?

All our customers automatically receive the Primeo Standard product. If you have recently moved into the Primeo Energie network area or have never changed your product, you will be supplied with the Primeo Standard product. Your current electricity product is also listed in the customer portal my.primeo-energie.ch and on your electricity bill. Of course, it is possible to switch to Primeo Grün.

How can I switch my electricity product?

It’s really simple: visit our customer portal my.primeo-energie.ch. Select the product you want, then choose the type of electricity, such as Primeo Grün, and send us your enquiry. We’ll be happy to take care of the rest for you.

If you have not yet registered for our customer portal, please go to my.primeo-energie.ch, click on “Register” at the top and fill in the form.

Which certifications do the electricity products have?

Primeo Standard and Primeo Green are renewable electricity without additional certification.

Why are the electricity products in the basic supply package no longer naturemade-certified?

The certification guidelines for naturemade electricity products provide for the creation of a fund for environmental improvement measures. In 2026, these fund contributions amounted to 0.7 Rp./kWh. Products bearing the naturemade label must be certified, which incurs further costs.

According to ElCom, neither of these cost items may any longer be included in the price of electricity products under the universal service provision. This legal interpretation by ElCom was confirmed by a Federal Administrative Court ruling and must be implemented by the end of 2027 at the latest.

What is “supported electricity”?

All customers in Switzerland pay a grid surcharge (federal levy to promote renewable energies and for ecological refurbishment of hydropower) of currently 2.3 centimes per kilowatt hour with their electricity bill. Customers thus contribute to supporting electricity production from renewable energies.

In return, the quality (proof of origin) of this subsidised production is passed on to customers, as the energy supplier does not have to obtain certificates of origin for the entire amount of electricity, but only for the amount minus the subsidised electricity.

In March of the following year, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy provides information about the exact composition of supported electricity. Primeo Energie shows the proportion of supported electricity for each electricity product in the electricity declaration. Information about the composition of electricity products is provided without the supported electricity, as the exact percentages are not publicly disclosed until the following year.

When are the high and low tariff periods?

The following applies to the standard tariff:

High tariff
Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Low tariff
All other times, as well as all day on 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, 1 August and 25 December, provided that network conditions and the available control equipment permit.

Special tariff periods apply to the optional tariffs; see Primeo Dynamisch and Primeo Aktiv.

Does Primeo Energie's sponsorship increase electricity prices?

Primeo Energie's sponsorship and advertising as a whole have no influence on the electricity prices of end customers in the basic supply and therefore the monopoly area in the grid business segment. In accordance with the requirements of the legislator (regulator), the costs of market development (advertising, sponsorship) may not be charged to the grid and therefore not to customers in the basic supply. Accordingly, the costs for sponsoring and advertising are borne by Primeo Energie Genossenschaft and by the companies that provide their products and services on the free market and thus in a competitive environment.

Why should I pay 2 Rp./kWh more for the new Primeo Green?

With Primeo Grün, you are supporting the sale of electricity from flagship and pioneering power stations. The electricity from these stations is more expensive than that from conventional power stations, but it contributes to the independence of Swiss electricity production and to the success of the energy transition.

Let’s take alpine photovoltaic installations as an example. Normally, solar panels are installed on existing roofs. This means minimal costs for the panel mounting structure and connection to the electricity grid. In high mountain regions, however, these panels must be anchored to the rock in a specialised manner, and access to the electricity grid is usually more challenging.

What is the advantage of alpine solar power plants?
The greatest advantage of alpine solar power plants is their high electricity output during the winter months; as a result, these plants help to reduce the winter electricity shortfall.

The key advantages in detail:

  • Plenty of winter electricity: They are often situated above the fog line and therefore receive significantly more direct sunlight in winter than lowland areas.
  • Albedo effect (snow reflection): Snow strongly reflects sunlight. When the panels are mounted at a steep angle, they capture this additional radiation and boost output.
  • Better cooling efficiency: Solar cells operate more efficiently at low temperatures. The cold mountain air therefore increases the efficiency of the panels.
  • Higher total yield: Over the course of a whole year, one kilowatt-peak (kWp) of capacity in the mountains often generates significantly more kilowatt-hours of electricity than in the lowlands.
  • Greater independence: The domestic and decarbonised energy supply is strengthened, which reduces dependence on electricity imports from abroad in winter.
