Using electricity flexibly – when it’s worth it.
More and more customers are using solar panels, electric vehicles, heat pumps and other electrical appliances. This is changing the way electricity is generated and consumed – and, as a result, the demands placed on our electricity grid.
At the same time, this opens up a new opportunity to use electricity more flexibly and intelligently, and to shift consumption when it makes sense to do so.
Why flexible tariffs?
Electricity is not always in equally short supply.
The supply and demand for electricity fluctuate throughout the day. Consequently, the price may also change. A dynamic tariff makes these price fluctuations visible.
Those who time their electricity consumption differently can make targeted use of price signals.
Where is the flexibility?
Many appliances can do more than just consume electricity.
Electric vehicles, heat pumps, battery storage systems and other electrical applications offer opportunities for load shifting or can be controlled automatically.
- Electric car: Charge when electricity is cheaper or the grid is under less strain.
- Heat pump: Optimise operation within suitable time slots.
- Battery: Store and use electricity in a targeted manner.
- Other applications: Shift consumption to different times where possible and appropriate.
What is the study’s key finding?
Flexibility does not work through motivation alone.
Our customer survey shows that technical capabilities and willingness are important prerequisites. For flexibility to be effectively utilised in everyday life, its application must be simple, predictable and, as far as possible, automated.
- Simple – No unnecessary extra effort.
- Predictable – Clarity on when and how flexibility can be utilised.
- Automated – Where possible, intelligent control handles the rescheduling.
What do customers want?
In collaboration with Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Primeo Energie 2025 investigated how private customers perceive flexible electricity tariffs and what factors are crucial for their uptake.
We wrote to 50,000 customers. We received 2,196 valid responses.
The results show that the technical potential is there. The key is to turn this into a solution that works in everyday life.
What does this mean for you?
Residential customers
Do you have an electric car, a heat pump, a battery or other electrical appliances? If so, flexibility might be of interest to you.
Primeo Energie offers a range of options – from time-variable tariffs to solutions that allow you to shift your consumption in a targeted manner.
Business customers
Businesses also have electricity consumption that can, in some cases, be shifted or controlled – for example, in relation to charging infrastructure, heating/cooling, storage systems or specific processes.
The future of energy is becoming more flexible.
We want to shape this development together with our customers – with tariffs and solutions that are easy to understand and enable flexibility in everyday life.
