AVAG lowers electricity prices in 2026 – New optional tariff for grid-friendly consumption behaviour
Münchenstein, 29 August 2025 – Aare Versorgungs AG (AVAG) is lowering its electricity prices by around 1 per cent in 2026. The tariffs were calculated on the basis of the new Electricity Law. The company is also introducing a new dynamic optional tariff to reward grid-friendly consumption behaviour.
On 1 January 2026, electricity prices for basic supply will fall by around 1 per cent overall. For households with an annual consumption of 4,500 kWh, this means a reduction in costs of 20 Swiss francs. Commercial enterprises with an annual demand of 30,000 kWh can expect a reduction of 105 Swiss francs. The reduction varies for individual customers depending on the product and purchase profile (supply voltage, high tariff, low tariff). This is already the second price reduction in a row. Electricity prices had already fallen by 1 per cent in 2025 compared to the previous year.
Energy is becoming cheaper, grid usage prices are rising
The electricity price for end customers with basic supply essentially consists of the components energy, grid costs and levies. Electricity market prices are now between 8 and 10 centimes per kilowatt hour. This is significantly below the level during the energy crisis in 2022/2023, but still higher than before. Energy prices are heavily dependent on price developments on the electricity markets. The energy component of the electricity price is falling by 6 per cent. On the other hand, grid usage prices have risen. The main reason for this is the profound restructuring that the Swiss electricity grid is currently undergoing in order to keep pace with the expansion of renewable energies. This also requires AVAG to make significant investments in grid infrastructure and the conversion of the grid to a smart grid. Added to this is the increasing cost of operation. The increase in self-consumption of locally produced solar power leads to a lower amount of electricity in the grid, which also increases grid usage prices per kilowatt hour due to fixed cost structures. The costs for Swissgrid's system services have fallen from 0.55 to 0.27 pence. On the other hand, the levy for the federal government's electricity reserve has risen from 0.23 to 0.41 pence. In addition, from 2026 onwards, the levy introduced by the federal government for solidarity costs, which amounts to 0.05 pence per kilowatt hour, will apply for the first time. Overall, the levies balance each other out.
Electricity Law brings adjustments
The calculation of the tariffs for 2026 is based on the new electricity legislation that was adopted in the referendum in June 2024. This brings with it a number of adjustments. From 2026, the costs for electricity meters and metering services must be shown and billed separately in a metering tariff. They will therefore no longer be included in the general grid usage tariff (basic price). The new local electricity communities (LEG) that will be possible from 2026 will also bring about adjustments to the grid usage tariffs. If the electricity generated in an LEG is used within the community, the grid tariff is up to 40 per cent cheaper.
New optional tariff ‘Primeo NetzDynamisch’
On 1 January 2026, AVAG will be one of the first Swiss grid operators to introduce an intelligent and dynamic optional grid usage tariff. With ‘Primeo NetzDynamisch’, the price changes hourly, depending on how heavily the electricity grid is expected to be loaded. The prices for the following day are set and announced by 6 p.m. each day. Those who actively manage their electricity consumption and thus help to reduce the load on the grid can lower their electricity costs. ‘Primeo NetzDynamisch’ is suitable for customers with larger shiftable loads in the basic customer group and the corresponding technical requirements. The potential annual savings amount to up to 20 per cent of grid costs. AVAG will inform its customers in writing about the individual adjustments in the course of the next three months with the next billing cycle.
