Information on electricity prices in 2025

On this page you will find the most important information about the adjustment of the basic electricity tariffs for 2025, an explanatory video about the composition of the electricity price and answers to your most important questions. Primeo Energie is not free to determine the electricity tariffs, they follow the provisions of the electricity legislation, are reviewed by the national regulatory authority and vary depending on the household and its product and purchasing profile. Primeo Energie informs its customers in writing about the individual adjustments from the end of August to the end of November with the usual billing cycle.

From 1 January 2025, electricity prices for Primeo Energie customers in the basic supply will fall. Electricity prices are heavily dependent on price trends on the electricity markets and regulatory requirements. While the share of energy and levies to the federal government and municipalities will fall in 2025, the costs for the distribution grid will rise due to higher investments in expansion and conversion in connection with the energy transition. Overall, the average price decline is around 1%.

Questions and answers

The market prices for electricity have recovered. Why are electricity prices in the basic supply not falling more significantly? They are doing so with other energy suppliers.

The energy price remains the same overall or falls slightly in Primeo Energie's supply areas. Following the electricity market peaks in 2022, the energy market has now calmed down, but procurement prices are still higher than before the energy crisis. Like many other companies, Primeo Energie pursues a long-term procurement strategy and smooths out the price effects for its customers by purchasing tranches over three years. The electricity price peaks in 2022 will therefore continue to have an impact on electricity prices in 2025, albeit to a much lesser extent than in previous years. The reduction in coverage differences from previous years reduces the effect of falling energy costs. While many other energy suppliers had to significantly increase their energy tariffs once again last year, Primeo Energie has already been able to reduce the energy portion of the electricity price or keep it the same by taking measures to reduce costs. This is one of the reasons why the percentage change for the 2025 tariffs is lower than that of other suppliers.

What are cover differences?

Coverage differences arise when a grid operator's income from electricity tariffs does not exactly match the costs incurred. As it takes almost two years from the tariff communication to the actual results, the income can be higher or lower than the costs. If the revenue is lower, this is referred to as a shortfall and the grid operator can later charge the customer for these costs. In the opposite case, this is referred to as over-recovery and the grid operator must pay the difference back to the customers.

Coverage differences are usually reduced within three years by including them in the electricity tariff. They have a correspondingly increasing or decreasing effect on electricity prices. Coverage differences are incurred for grid utilisation and energy. During the energy crisis, unexpectedly high negative coverage differences were incurred, which still have the effect of increasing electricity tariffs.

What is the «electricity reserve for the winter» levy for?

In 2022, the federal government created the «winter reserve» (hydropower reserve, reserve power plants, emergency power groups) to ensure the supply of electricity in the winter of 2022/2023. The costs for these emergency measures will be included in the grid usage tariff in the electricity price for the first time in 2024 and will therefore also contribute to the increase in the electricity price. The levy for the electricity reserve to finance the provision of the hydropower reserve and the availability of reserve power plants amounts to 0.23 cents/kWh for the year 2025 (excluding VAT).

Do electricity prices of each supplier increase uniformly?

No. The increase in electricity prices varies from supplier to supplier. In the energy segment, the differences depend largely on whether the majority of electricity is sourced from in-house production or procured on the market. Four out of five energy suppliers stated that the majority of their electricity is procured on the market. This also includes Primeo Energie. Accordingly, customers have benefited from the very low procurement prices in recent years. Energy supply companies with a high level of in-house production have to raise their prices only slightly or not at all. In the past, however, they have generally already had a higher price level due to their higher production costs than the market. The grid utilisation part depends heavily on the investments in grid expansion and conversion that the respective energy supplier has planned.

Is Primeo Energie's sponsorship reflected in energy prices?

The regulated electricity and grid tariffs are monitored by the Electricity Commission (ElCom) and it is clearly regulated what may and may not be included as costs. Accordingly, the costs for sponsorship and advertising are not charged to the grid, but to the Elektra Birseck cooperative, and therefore have no influence on the final prices (electricity bills) for customers with a basic supply. We carry out advertising and sponsorship in particular for those business areas and products and services that are on the market and are therefore exposed to competition. This concerns the areas of heat, energy, e-mobility, etc., and not the tied grid customers. As a local company, we are continuously committed to the common good and recognise our social responsibility. Every year, the Assembly of Delegates of the EBM cooperative approves a six-figure sum from Primeo Energie's profits, which we use to support many charitable institutions as well as sporting, cultural and social organisations. How can I save electricity?

We recommend that private households use energybox.ch to determine their energy-saving potential and to get valuable information. An energy consultancy can help with more complex issues.

Where can I see how much energy I use currently?

You can see your current electricity consumption on your electricity meter (Wirkenergie vorwärts) and, if you have a SmartMeter, you can find the monthly values in the Primeo Energie customer portal my.primeo-energie.ch. If you do not yet have a login, please select the ‘Register’ tab at the top and fill in the fields accordingly.

Why is my on-account payment increasing?

The account invoice is adjusted on the occasion of the annual periodic invoice. For this purpose, the current consumption, the future price and the corresponding accounts are calculated.

How will VAT change?

As a result of the vote on the ‘Federal decree on the additional financing of the AHV through an increase in VAT’ on 25 September 2022, VAT was increased to 8.1 percent as of 1 January 2024.

On my invoice on account, everything is charged at the new higher VAT rate, although the lower rate should still apply to some of the payments. How can that be?

The withdrawals are distributed pro rata over the years. If you do not wish this, please inform us of your meter readings at the end of each year.
